Portland, ND

Patty (Patricia) Grandalen passed away on July 1, 2024 at Hatton Prairie Village with her family by her side under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Patty was born on March 29, 1939 on a farm near Buxton, ND to Olive (Foss) and Peter J. Sand. She was raised on a farm near Galesburg, ND, attended country school, Stordahl Church and later graduated from Clifford High School. She attended college in Mayville, ND and taught at rural schools near Portland, ND.

Patty married Bennie Grandalen, Jr. on December 11, 1960 at Aurdal Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed in Golden Lake Township, where Bennie still resides. Together they raised five children and instilled many family traditions. She loved hosting all of her family and friends at both their family farm and cabin at Golden Lake. Watermelon, sweet corn and popcorn were her top food choices often served. Meals were served after her favorite prayer followed by the sayings God Bless America and Takk for Maten. The family always celebrated Christmas on Christmas Day, where no presents were opened until the Christmas Story was read and the full nativity scene recreated…. followed by singing Happy Birthday to Jesus. The 4th of July was another favorite where she would serve a huge garbage can meal for all family and friends.

Patty was an amazing mother, homemaker, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and co-worker. When her children were older, she worked at Hatton Prairie Village and Traill County Social Services where she assisted and loved all of her clients.

Patty was a member of Bang Lutheran Church, participated in WELCA, held several offices, taught Sunday school and enjoyed quilting.
