Orin L. Thompson

   Orin Lenard Thompson, age 89 of Portland ND, died on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Sanford Hospital in Mayville, ND. 

   Orin was born on March 25, 1930 on a farm southwest of Hatton ND to parents George and Alma (Foss) Thompson. He grew up in rural Hatton ND.  He attended rural country schools and Hatton High School. He joined the Navy and was later Honorably Discharged in 1954. After returning home, he worked for various farmers in the area.

   Orin was united in marriage to Marlys Larson in March of 1958.  After their marriage, Orin started working at the Hatton Farmers Elevator, from there he worked at the Portland Junction Elevator for approximately eight years. In 1970, his family moved out to the farm where he started farming.  Orin then retired from the elevator and started farming full time in 1972. He retired from farming in 1995 but continued working on the farm helping his son Gary. In 2008, Orin and Marlys moved to Portland ND.

   He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Hatton Legion Post 70, where he was a member for 61 years. Orin enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, mowing the lawn, driving around looking at crops, and of course playing his guitar with his friends. 

   Orin is survived by his son: Gary (Leslie) Thompson of Mayville ND; grandchildren: Amy (Pat) Helling of Grand Forks ND, Mark (Amber) Thompson of Hatton ND and Holly Thompson of Mayville ND; great grandchildren: Gradie (Amy), Jack and Rhett (Mark): and a sister: Jean (Kenny) Brustad of Mayville ND. 

   Orin his preceded in death by his parents: George and Alma Thompson; brother: Glenn Thompson and sister: Adelaide Smestad.  

Memorial Service: will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, August 16, 2019 at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville, ND, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service.

Military Honors: Carroll O. Flesche American Legion Post 70 of Hatton, ND.

Burial: Will be in St. John Cemetery in Hatton, ND.
