Norma Hogfoss, 95, of Mayville, ND passed away on Sunday at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND.
Norma was born to Ted and Agnes (Moe) Pederson on the Tolin farm by Golden Lake on September 8,1927. She attended Golden Lake Center School the first 8 grades, attended Finley High School freshman and sophomore year, junior and senior year in Portland, where she graduated in 1945. She worked at Juvet’s Cafe, where she met Kenny Hogfoss. She attended New York Hairdressing School of Fargo, ND in March 1946, where her first job was at Gladys Browns beauty shop, which was by the theater in Mayville. She married Kenneth November 30, 1946 and they welcomed a daughter Karen Nan on September 8, 1947. That was quite a birthday present. Perry was born January 21, 1952. Karen passed away April 21, 1959 at 11 years old from Lupus. On May 12, 1960 Karry Ann was born.
In 1970 she took a refresher course in Fargo and went back to work at Joyce’s. Later on, she opened her own shop, Norma’s Beauty Box, uptown Mayville. Later she moved the business in the house her mother-in-law Valborg lived in. She retired and sold her business to fellow worker Verna Goldal, but after a year or so she itched to get back to work and be around people, so in 1994 she started working at the Diamond Cut with Judy Eastvold. The gals there really spoiled her, those years she had so much fun. She retired in 1999.
She was involved with so much in her life. Mary and Sarah circle in Mayville Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School and vacation Bible school for years. The last years she was the official coffee pourer and worked in the kitchen for Sunshine group, that served for funerals. She was in Ladies aide, quilting and VFW Auxiliary. She played in bridge club, with the same ladies for 50 years, in later years she played PEO scholarship bridge through the college. She played pinochle and go fish with grandchildren and great grandchildren. People wanted to learn to play bridge from her since she was a very good player. The family spent 22 years at Golden Lake, did a lot of fishing and had a lot of fun. The actual Golden Lake was her grandma’s pasture before it was a lake and she could stand by the kitchen window at the lake and see the place she was born. She loved bingo and was normally very lucky. She knitted, crocheted, sewed, made dresses for Karry. She sewed Karry’s wedding dress which meant the world to her along with 4 other dresses for Karry’ nieces. She made a stained-glass window for Karry since she would attempt anything.
Karry always told her when she wanted to move, she could live with her. She sat and planned out on paper how her place was going to be, to the smallest detail. She lived there from 2011-2021 where her favorite son-in-law played a huge part in her life. When her health was failing she went to Luther Memorial Home, where she thrived. She loved her room and her CNAs, but she had a certain RN that was pretty special and checked on her. and it helped knowing she was there. Melissa.
