Mary passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the age of 80 under the wonderful care of the Hatton Prairie Village and Hospice of the Red River Valley. She fought a courageous battle against Parkinson Disease for 34 years.
Mary was born on July 29, 1943 to (John) Willis and Esther (Anderson) Johnson in Mayville, North Dakota. She attended Grade School and High School in Galesburg, North Dakota. She graduated from Mayville State College with an Elementary Teaching degree. She taught in Tyler Minnesota, Neche North Dakota and Clifford North Dakota. She was a leave replacement in the US Postal System for many years in Luverne and Galesburg until she retired.
In 1966, she married her high school sweetheart, Gary Halvorson at Elm River Church. They lived on a farm and raised 3 children. In 1991, they moved from the farm to Galesburg, North Dakota to a house that was built by Mary’s Grandfather. Mary enjoyed going to the Lakes and having family around. She was unbeatable at Scrabble and loved to play boardgames. She also enjoyed crocheting and cross stitching. Her love and compassion for animals, except for birds and reptiles, was passed on to her children.
We would like to thank the people that helped take care of Mary for so many years so she could stay at home, Martina Lyng, Cindy Sanderson, Barb Halvorson and Jessica Wika, we will be forever grateful for all of you.
Mary’s children would also like to thank their dad Gary for showing us what true love looks like, the care that you showed our mother throughout the years is the epitome of love.
Mary is survived by her loving husband: Gary; children: Jane (Deborah Nobliski) Halvorson of Galesburg, ND, Curtis Halvorson of Galesburg, ND and Laura (Russell) Floberg of Fergus Falls, MN; grandchildren: Christopher (Olivia) Halvorson, Nicholas Floberg and Casie Floberg; great grandchildren: James Teilman-Halvorson and Haley Teilman-Halvorson; sister: Barbara (Curtis) Ness of Fargo, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral Service: Will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 29, 2024 at the Elm River Lutheran Church in Galesburg, ND.
Burial: Will be in the Stordahl Cemetery in Galesburg, ND.
