Marlin Karlstad, 76, of Mayville, ND died Monday, December 9, 2024 at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Marlin "Goose" Karlstad was a man whose nickname was a topic of curiosity. He was always asked how he got the name “Goose”. Born to Marvin and Alene (Bjertness) Karlstad, he lived a life rich with love, friendship, and adventure.
Goose's greatest joy was his family. He was married to Kathy (Leiseth) Karlstad, a union that brought warmth and happiness into their home. He is survived by his beloved children, Holly Karlstad and Crystal (husband Dan) Karlstad. His role as a stepfather to Kristine Wallin (husband Andrew) and Katie Stende was cherished, and his grandsons, Dillon and Max Thykeson, were the apples of his eye. Goose was a big brother to his siblings: Ted (wife Lois) Karlstad of Mayville, ND, and his sisters: Sheri Sheehan of Colorado, Jan (husband Rod) Brekken of Casselton, ND, and Kathy (husband Randy) Ball of Fargo, ND. Many nieces and nephews also held a special place in his heart.
Goose was confirmed at Mayville Lutheran Church, graduated from Mayville High School, and proudly served in the U.S. Navy assigned to the U.S.S. Concord. His educational journey continued at NDSSS, where he earned a degree in A/C and Refrigeration. Goose’s professional life was marked by his dedication, working at Crystal Sugar, Portland Bean, MSU as a heating plant supervisor and UND steam plant. He also ran his own business, Karlstad Refrigeration, where his work ethic and skill were well known.
Goose was more than just a hard worker; he was a man of many talents and passions. In his youth, he was a ski jumper at Paulson Farm, winning numerous trophies. Every summer, he would spend a week fishing with friends at Minaki, a tradition he maintained for 25 years. His love for hunting and fishing was passed down to his grandsons, Dillon and Max, who will carry on his legacy. Retirement found Goose living his dream at Devils Lake, where he fished, camped, and enjoyed the company of his many Haybale Heights fishing buddies (too many to name). Rainy days were perfect for playing pinochle, another pastime he cherished. Goose was also a dedicated UND Hockey fan, and he loved his family deeply. He would never admit it but this included his cats, Foxy and Tonka, whom he spoiled with treats.
Goose's life was a celebration of love, friendship, and the great outdoors. He will be remembered for his hard work, kindness, and the countless stories he left behind. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
