Marion Irene Brasel, age 88, of rural Mayville, ND passed away peacefully in her home with her children by her side and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Marion was born on April 30, 1936 at home in Steele County to Melvin and Magda (Otteson) Bjerke. She grew up on the family farm and moved into Portland, ND to attend high school. She was confirmed and baptized at Perry Lutheran Church in rural Portland. She graduated from Portland High School in 1954. She began her nursing career at Union Hospital in Mayville, ND and remained there for several years. After a short time working at the Luther Memorial Home, she retired in 1986.
Marion married Orion Kvernen in November of 1954 and together they had 7 children. They later divorced. In January of 1986, she married Frank Brasel of rural Blanchard, ND. Together they lived on the farmstead and enjoyed fishing and entertaining family and friends. Frank passed away in 2004 and Marion remained on the farmstead until her passing.
She loved being outside taking care of her yard. She also enjoyed gardening, painting and canning the many vegetables that came out of her garden. No one could mow her lawn the right way (except her) and she would often be seen out on her tractor, mower or deck supervising the work her kids were doing whether it be cutting down trees, planting her garden or cleaning out her garage.
Marion is survived by her children: Terry (Lynn) Strand, Paul (Tamarie) Kvernen, Dale (Kim) Kvernen, Cheri Kvernen and Jenell (Ron) Braseth. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by a sister: Corrine Knudson; a brother: Robert (Sharon) Bjerke and 2 sisters-in-law: Eleanor Bjerke and Dorothy Grage.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Melvin and Magda Bjerke; husband: Frank Brasel; son: Darrell Kvernen; daughter: Geri Kvernen; brothers: Sam Herman and Richard Bjerke; sisters: Marcella Moen and Arlene Hanson and several nieces and nephews.
Marion’s family would like to extend our sincere thank you to Steven and Linda Hillstad, Ethan and Ashley Hanson, Joel Nelson, Angie Davis and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their kindness and many hours devoted to helping her. This did not go unnoticed by her family and allowed Marion to remain in her home.
