Marie E. Rindy

May 13, 1925 — January 20, 2025

Mayville, ND

Marie E. Rindy, 99, of Mayville, ND passed away on January 20, 2025, at the Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND, surrounded by her family.

Marie Elizabeth (Holmes) Rindy was born on May 13, 1925, in Chinook, Montana, to Harold and Mildred (Halvorson) Holmes. She was the second oldest of seven children. She grew up in and around Chinook, graduating from Chinook High School in 1943. Following graduation, Marie worked in Nampa, Idaho, for 3 and a half years in the personnel office of the power company. She moved back to Chinook and worked at an insurance company before becoming the deputy Clerk of Court at the Blaine County Court House. One day, while walking in Chinook, Marie met a young man from Portland, ND, who had come to work at the sugar beet plant and was staying with his cousin. Later, they met again at a local dance, and their courtship began. After proposing, Bennett moved back to rural Portland to work with his father on the family farm. He sent Marie her engagement ring in the mail. They were married in Chinook on September 24, 1950. Marie returned with Bennett to North Dakota, where they lived in a four-room home he had built for them. It was here they started their family, eventually moving into the original family farm home. Marie and Bennett became parents to six children; family and her faith were the centers of her life.

Marie became a member of Perry Lutheran Church and remained a member the rest of her life. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid, sang in the choir and faithfully attended services as long as she was able. She had a wide range of friendships including her Perry and Bang Church families, farm neighbors, her in-laws and her beloved Birthday Club members. She also kept in contact with her Chinook friends and family. She worked extremely hard as a farm wife but she found the time to teach herself to crochet, do needlework and give handiwork to family and friends. Many of her children and grandchildren received crocheted throws lovingly made by Marie. She always found time to play a game of cards or board games with her children and grandchildren, even when she entered the nursing home. Marie loved birthdays and Christmas! She enjoyed finding gifts to give to every member of her family and receiving gifts was also appreciated. A child of the Depression Marie always found a way to stretch a dollar.

Marie was kept busy baking and cooking and her goal was to qualify for the Pillsbury Bake Off. Her family was treated to a variety of invented recipes, some quite interesting. Marie finally received an “Honorable Mention” award for one of her submissions for which she was given a leather-bound Pillsbury Bake Off recipe book with her name embossed on the front cover. She was very proud of this book. Her children were regularly treated to the aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, buns, donuts, or other treats when they returned home from school.

Marie’s faith sustained her throughout her life, especially during the passing of her son Dale before his second birthday and the illness and eventual death of her husband in 1995. She and Bennett moved into Portland in 1991. She lived in her home there until 2019 when she moved into the Sun Center Apartments in Mayville. She lived in her apartment until her health required the assistance provided at Luther Memorial Home where she lived until her death.

Marie is survived by her children: Shirley (William) Bohnsack of Mayville; Anita (Michael) McCurdy of Fort Wayne, IN, Dennis (Nancy) Rindy of Portland, Dean (Stacy) Rindy of Ottertail Lake, MN and Darrell Rindy of Warren, MN; grandchildren: Kate (Dave) McCoy, Joanna Suhayda, Michael (Sheila) Bohnsack, Anne (Kellen) Arneson, Amy (Brenden) Timpe, Laura (Teddy) Hoepfner, Donna (Trenton) Bovitz, Jaclyn (Terrel) Voth, Roxanne Rindy, Beth (David) Duque, Bennett (Carley Rortvedt ) Rindy, Devan (Olivia Simonson) Rindy and 21 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings: Helen Parnell, John Holmes and Richard (Renae) Holmes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Bennett; son: Dale; brother: Robert (Fern) Holmes; sister: Arlene and Anna (Jack) Sattleen; brother-in-law: William Parnell; brothers and sisters-in-law: Walter (Violet) Rindy, Howard (Phyllis and Mabel) Rindy and Lila (Delos) Braton.
