Hartvick "Hoppy" Olson

November 8, 1930 — October 11, 2020

Hartvick “Hoppy” Olson, 89, of Mayville, ND, road off to heaven on a horse at the Luther Memorial Home  with his family saying good-by on Sunday, October 11, 2020.

He was born on November 8, 1930 to Swedish immigrant father Carl and his mother Betsy (Hagen) Olson in Portland, ND. He grew up with two brothers and five sisters. Hop attended country school and graduated from Portland high school in 1948. The Army called and sent him to Alaska; he said he got on the wrong train. After his discharge, Hoppy returned to Portland.

On November 28, 1954 he married Donna Mae Dockin in Hallock, MN and they continued to farm at Portland Junction with his brother: Carl, Jr. They had two sons and two daughters. His life was to continue with crops, cows and pigs. With help from Donna Mae and later his sister-in-law: Shirley, the farm work and chores were always seen to; they were instrumental on the farm. One of his pride and joy “jobs” was to pick up and return rural students from school on Bus #3, treats were included, for sure. The couple moved to Strasburg, ND where Donna Mae taught school, returning to Portland in 2002. Lots of good times and memories followed.

He was a member of Aurdal Lutheran Church, Farmers Union and a life member of the American Legion.

Hop leaves behind his daughter: Sharon of Champlin, MN, son: Dana (Laurie) Olson of Fingal, ND, daughter: Sheila Rustvang of Portland, ND and Daniel (Janice) Olson of Hastings, MN. His true blessing from his children are his 7 grandchildren: Kylie Jo (Robert) Olson, Ryan (Amy) Olson, Tyler Olson, Katie (Travis) Olson, Adam Rustvang, James Rustvang and Jordan Olson; along with his great~grandchildren: Thea Olson, Otto Olson and Rudy Olson. He is also survived by his siblings: Irene Anderson, Marjorie Montplaisir, Lorraine Weeding and Harriet Schmidt; two sisters-in-law: Shirley Olson and Yvonne Carriere. His love was shared with all his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Donna on May 28, 2017; siblings: John T., Carl, Jr. and Eleanore Olslund; brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
