Eileen Joyce McMullen

October 19, 1928 — May 26, 2018

   Eileen Joyce McMullen, 89 years old, died May 26, 2018 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville surrounded by loving family.    Eileen (Rusty) O’Hara was born October 19, 1928 to Joseph and Nettie (Nash) O’Hara in Grand Forks, ND. She grew up on a farm north of Petersburg along with her older brother Glenn. Eileen graduated from Michigan High School. Eileen attended Mayville State Teachers college where she earned her teaching certificate. It was while attending Mayville that she met Harvey McMullen, the love of her life. They were married June 7, 1951. Harvey passed away October 9, 2015 after 64 years of marriage.  Rusty and Harvey taught school in Sharon, ND and Ada MN. Rusty then stayed home to raise their 5 children. She went back to Mayville State to complete her BS in Elementary Education and graduated the same spring her eldest daughter Sue graduated from high school. Rusty and Harvey then purchased the Mayville Dairy Queen with lifetime friends Jerome and Shirley Berg. Rusty and Shirley managed the DQ for 10 years. It wasn’t long following that Rusty and Harvey bought into the Four Seasons Department Store in Mayville. Rusty managed that along with co-owner Lydia Larson until she retired.    Rusty was very active in the community and church. She enjoyed volunteering. When her eyesight failed her so that she could no longer enjoy her hobbies she spent countless hours visiting residents in the nursing home. Rusty enjoyed sewing, playing bridge, reading, gardening, and treasured her times spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.    Rusty is survived by daughter’s Sue (Tim) Strand, Julie (Terry) Graham, Laurie (Tom) Weiskopf, Mary Jo (Mark) Amb; son Jim McMullen. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Charlotte McMullen and numerous nephews and nieces.  She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey; parents; brother Glenn; sister-in-law Alice O’Hara and brother-in-law Jim McMullen.    Memorials are preferred to the Mayville State University Harvey and Eileen McMullen scholarship fund, Mayville Luther Memorial Home or Hospice of the Red River Valley. Visitation:  Will be 5–7 PM with a 7 PM Public Prayer Service on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the Luther Memorial Home Chapel in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND. Burial: Will be in the Mayville Cemetery in Mayville, ND.
