Edward “Eddy” John Haugen, 64, Portland, died Sunday, March 9, 2025 at home surrounded by family after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Eddy was born September 6, 1960 in Mayville, ND. He grew up in the Mayville-Portland area and graduated from Mayville-Portland High School in 1979. He married Glenda Haugen on May 21, 1983; they made their home in Portland, ND. Together, they had a son, Terry (also known as “Crowbar”), in 1984 and then a daughter, JoAnna, in 1987.

He worked many years for the City of Portland as the Public Works Director before becoming a Heavy Equipment Operator/Truck Driver for various employers including Paulson Gravel, Lakeside Construction, Transystems, and finally Steele County Highway Department, where he worked up until being diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of February 2025.

Eddy spent most of his free time chit chatting with friends and family, quite often talking about pickups and road conditions. Most of those talks took place up at Floyd’s Bar on a Saturday morning over coffee.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda; son, Terry (Angela) Haugen and their daughter, Ryan, Clifford, ND.; daughter, JoAnna (Luke) Nielson, along with their children, Logan and Paisley, Portland, ND; and sister, Becky (Dale) Mapel, Barnesville, MN. He is also survived by nieces, Stacy and Renae; nephew, Adam; and their families.

Eddy was preceded in death by his parents, Berglot and Sigbert Haugen.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the Portland Fire Department, Portland, ND or Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo, ND.

Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at Norsemen Hall in Portland, ND.

Celebration of Life Service: Will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Norsemen Hall in Portland, ND. It is Eddy’s wish that those in attendance come in everyday clothes.

Burial: Will be at the Bruflat Cemetery in Portland, ND immediately following the service.
