Surrounded with love both near and afar, Duane Nelson, 90, peacefully passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Luther Memorial Home under the care of Hospice. Duane was born February 5, 1928 at the home farm west of Portland to parents, Olaf and Ida (Holkesvig) Nelson. A kind and hard working man throughout his life, he attended country school in Roseville Township through the eighth grade. He continued into adulthood farming side by side with his father and later on, with his sons, Daniel and James. In 1948, he married Bonnie Chilsted and together raised four children. Beyond farming, Duane supported the family anyway he could - hauling cattle, working the potato fields, hauling cement for the missile sites, and more. He is survived by his four children: Douglas of Long Beach, CA, Julie (Mark) Basol of North Ferrisburgh, VT, Daniel (LaDonna) of Portland and James (Rhonda) of Portland; three grandchildren: Craig Nelson Basol, Beau Nelson and Kendall Nelson. He is also survived by his youngest sister: Ina (Jerry) Paulson of Mayville. Duane is preceded in death by his wife: Bonnie; parents and sisters: Mavis Olerud, Eloise Leum and Lorraine Worden. The family would like to thank the Luther Memorial Home staff and many residents who provided friendship and care over the past three years. Memorials preferred to the Luther Memorial Home or the Perry Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation: Will be 5–7 PM with a 7 PM Public Prayer Service on Friday, April 27, 2018 at the Luther Memorial Home Chapel in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 1:00 PM Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Perry Lutheran Church in Portland, ND.
