Dan M. Walden, 83, of Mayville, ND passed away Friday, Oct.23, 2020 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND.
Dan Martin Walden was born June 2, 1937 in Inkster, ND, the son of Walter and Eunice (Hanner) Walden. Dan served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958. He was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and served as an Enlisted Navy Airman. On August 9, 1958 he married Ruth A. Vigen in East Grand Forks, MN. They began their life together in East Grand Forks, in 1968 they moved to Hatton, ND where they lived until 1984. Their life’s journey also took them to Mayville, ND; Nashville, TN; Warroad MN; Bemidji MN, Elko NV, and Erskine MN making many friends along the way.
Dan worked for Vigen Construction, specializing in grain elevator repair and construction. From 1976 to 1987 he owned his own business, Danny’s Construction of Hatton, ND. Dan attended East Grand Forks Technical College where he received a diploma in Truck Mechanics. Dan lovingly and proudly supported Ruth as she pursued her dream to become a special education teacher and acquire her Master’s degree.
Dan was an active member of his community and was a volunteer firefighter and city council member while living in Hatton. He enjoyed demolition derbies, helped organize and participated in the first ever demolition derby in Hatton, ND. His hobbies throughout life included music, boxing, mechanics, hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He especially enjoyed hosting pig roasts where he would create a feast of delicious foods for family and friends.
Dan is survived by his children: Scott (Dawn) Walden, Argusville, ND; Paula (Greg) Kurtz, Mentor, MN; Ross (Paula) Walden, Buxton, ND; Charles (Jeanne) Walden, Portland, ND. Grandchildren: Daniel Kurtz; Johnathon (Ashley) Kurtz; Christopher (Rachel) Walden, Ashley Walden, Rebecca (Eric) Fugleberg, Zachary Walden, Megan (Christopher) Gjelsness, and Nathaniel Walden. Great-grandchildren: Alexander, Matthew, Maximus, and Annabelle Walden; Thomas and Peter Fugleberg; Emma and baby Kurtz. Sister: Jolene (Dean) Dowhower; Brother: Dean Walden; sisters-in-law: Barbara Vigen and Candice (Irv) Galstad, bothers-in-law: Jerry Lawrence and John Coons, and many nieces and nephews.
Dan is proceeded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; two brothers, Ray Walden and George Walden; four sisters Irene Collins, Esther Bogert, Florence Linke and Lorraine Lawrence; brothers-in-law: Leo Bogert, George Linke, Jimmy Vigen, Howard Vigen, Alfred Vigen; sisters-in-law: Margret Walden, Darlene Walden, Mary Ann Coons, Annie Vigen.
