Carol M. Kost

   Carol Kost, 85, of Mayville, ND passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 25^th under the care of Luther Memorial Home and Hospice of the Red River Valley. 

   Carol Margaret Berger was born on August 28, 1937 in Valley City, ND to Herman and Wilma Berger. She graduated high school from Fort Ransom, ND.  Upon graduating high school, she earned her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree.    

   Carol married Dennis Kost on December 21, 1958, in Fort Ransom, ND. They lived in Fargo, Minneapolis, Mayville, Grand Forks and eventually settled in Portland in 1969.

   While Dennis had a passion for education, Carol’s passion was helping others through nursing.  She began her career at St. Luke’s Hospital (now Sanford) in Fargo, ND as a nurse in the surgical unit. When they settled in Mayville-Portland, she served as a nurse at Luther Memorial Home for 34 years. Her work ethic, love, and compassion for the residents was instilled upon many of her co-workers, both past and present. 

   Carol’s greatest passion was her family – her husband, sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She so loved the holidays when everyone would come home for Christmas, attend church at Mayville Lutheran, and gather for her famous Christmas Eve meal. Last but not least, she was a dedicated partner in the greenhouse she and her husband built – assisting customers, tending to tomatoes, and growing flowers. 

   She is survived by her sons: Scott (Karen) Casselton, ND, Kent (Shelly) Lake of the Ozarks, MO, Tim (Staci) Lakeville, MN, Chad (Stephanie) Fargo, ND; 14 grandchildren: Sarah (Matt), Bethany (Spencer), Laura (Philip), Jenna (Dustin), Gabriel, Ryan, Leonardo, Alexa (Jeremy), Mitchell, Jacob, Abbey, Luke, McKinley and Cameron; and ten great-grandchildren: Ella, Sadie, Reese, Betsy, June, Robert, Pax, Navy, Violet and Nishan: sister: Helen Friestad; and sister-in-law: Sharon Kost. 

   She was preceded in death by her sisters: Natalie and Ruth Marie, her parents: Herman and Wilma and her husband: Dennis. 

   Our family is so grateful for the dedicated staff at Luther Memorial Home and Hospice of the Red River Valley. 

   In lieu of flowers, please direct any gifts or memorials to the Luther Memorial Home or Mayville Lutheran Church. 

Visitation:  Will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral Service: Will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, May 1, 2023 at the Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND.

Burial: Will be in the Mayville Cemetery in Mayville, ND.
