Elroy C. Moen, 82, of Portland, died Thursday, December 28, 2006, at the Lakota Good Samaritan Center in Lakota, where he resided for the past year. Elroy was born March 9, 1924, at the home of his parents, Mabel (Hovde) and Carl Moen. After graduating from Portland High School, Elroy entered the US Army and eventually served with the 86th Infantry Division in Germany and later in the Philippines during World War II. Before leaving for overseas service, Elroy married his high school sweetheart, Eunice C. Holkesvig in July of 1944. Following his discharge from the Army, Elroy attended Mayville State College. Later, He worked as a meat cutter, sold health insurance for Blue Cross Blue Shield, farmed for several years and did crop reporting for the USDA before retiring. Elroy was a member of the Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland, was active in the Goose River Masonic Lodge, Mayville, and KEM Shrine Temple, Grand Forks. He was designated Mason of the Year and achieved the distinction of 32nd degree in KCCH member in the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a lifetime member of the Portland American Legion Post and the VFW. He also served on Portland’s School Board, taught Sunday school, worked for the Republican Party, and participated in Farm Bureau activities. Both he and Eunice were active members in Eastern Star and Portland Senior Citizens. Elroy is survived by three daughters, Eileen (Don) Hillesland, Yankton, SD; Joanne (Terry) Monson, Bismarck; and Carol (Doug) Manbeck, Lakota; one sister, Marjorie (John) Haugen, La Crescent, MN; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were two brothers; his parents; one sister, Gloria Anderson; one son Kenneth, in 1997; and his wife, Eunice, in 2005.
