Clenora Elizabeth Quanbeck, 92, of Mayville, passed away peacefully on Fri, Dec. 1st at the Luther Memorial Home. Clenora was born July 16, 1914, in Aneta, ND, to Sam and Nettie (Twedt) Quanbeck. Clenora was a graduate of Oak Grove Lutheran HS in Fargo, ND. She then graduated from Mayville State College and went on to the University of MN to receive her Master’s degree in Library Science. After a few years of teaching and serving as principle at McVille HS, Clenora returned to Mayville State College and stayed from 1952 to 1980. Clenora was the librarian and instructor of library science, as well as the dorm mother to the men of West Hall. She demanded proper behavior from these young men and was sometimes feared but always respected. Clenora influenced the lives of hundreds of young men and women. She always maintained a close connection with her church, New Luther Valley in McVille, and later, Mayville Lutheran. Clenora was a person with many hobbies like traveling, gardening, sewing, and baking. She was an active member of ALA, NDLA, AAUW, PEO, and Delta Kappa Gamma. In 1992, MSU honored Clenora by naming the library the Byrnes-Quanbeck Library. Clenora had been a student of Mrs. Brynes and was deeply honored to share the name and be recognized by the institution she loved. Thanks to her devoted MSU staff members: Betty Karaim, Margit Eastman and Marjorie Fugleberg, the Clenora E Quanbeck Library Science Scholarship has been set up to assist a library science student. Oak Grove Lutheran HS also has a scholarship fund for a deserving student that was set up by Miss Quanbeck in 1998. She was a wonderful, caring and generous person, especially where education was involved.
