Alvin Amb, 90, of Mayville, ND died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at his home in Mayville. Alvin was born July 21, 1919 to Martin and Marie (Haugen) Amb in Traill County. He grew up with seven siblings on the Martin Amb farm and attended school at Viking Township #10. From 1943-1944, during WWII, Alvin was in the US Navy as an aviation machinist mate 2nd class. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart after suffering leg injuries. Alvin married Annie Selid from Watford City, ND on March 28, 1947. Together they had 4 children and farmed west of Portland, ND. Alvin was a lifelong member of Little Forks Lutheran Church, rural Hatton, ND. He liked to golf and experienced 11 “hole-in-ones”. Many loved to hear Alvin play his banjo with Irving Eng on keys. Alvin enjoyed cooking, and feeding the birds from his homemade bird feeders. Creating his own inventions out of scraps, we call “Alvin-isms”, was a favorite past-time, along with telling stories. Alvin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annie of Mayville; four children, Marchelle (Mark) Zweber of Viera, FL, Coleene (Barry) Fernando of Phoenix, AZ, Bradley (Ellen Dean Homstad) Amb of Portland, ND, and Stephanie (McCauley) Olson of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Kjersten and Andrew Linkletter, Jennifer (Hugh) Fetla and Jerry Homstad, and Joseph, Patrick and Michelle McCauley; 2 great-grandchildren, Asher and Kota Fetla; 3 sisters, Ruda Hanson of Portland, Edna Cook of Florida, and Murlene Marotzke of Portland. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Thomas and Ingolf Amb and 2 sisters, Claudine Thompson and Delores Amb. Memorial Service: 1:00 PM, Sunday July 25, 2010 at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND. Visitation: One hour prior to the memorial service, at Baker Funeral Home.
