Palmer Julian Haugen, 91, of Mayville, ND, died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. He was born on October 10, 1918, in Portland, ND, the son of Peter and Marie (Berg) Haugen. Palmer attended rural school near Portland. Palmer married Amy Kringlen in Hatton, ND. The couple farmed outside Portland for many years. He returned to college and at the age of 42, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and History. He taught and later was principal at the Portland High School. Palmer continued to teach at the May-Port High School until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Valley Free Lutheran Church in Portland. In his retirement, he worked as the Portland City Auditor, sold vacuum cleaners and enjoyed his hobby of woodworking. Palmer is survived by his two daughters: Annita Booth of Chaska, MN and Arlette (Richard) Preston of Fargo, ND; two sons: Paul (Bonnie) Haugen of Rochester, MN and Philip (Gwen) Haugen of Crystal, MN; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded by his wife of 61 years, Amy on March 13, 2005; three sisters: Elvina Haagenson, Mildred Finstad and Juneth Nelson; two brothers: Oliver Haugen and Alf Haugen, all his siblings lived well into their nineties. He is also preceded by a son-in-law: Robert Booth and a great grandson: Alexander Stout. Visitation: Two hours prior to the funeral service at the church.
