Loren Ellsworth Halvorson, age 81 of Fargo, ND formerly of Galesburg, ND died Monday, March 22, 2010 at MeritCare Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND. Loren was born on January 2, 1929, in rural Northwood, ND to Halvor and Evelyn (Aasen) Halvorson. He attended rural school in Northwood and Sharon and at the age of 17 enlisted in the US Army and served with the Army of Occupation in Japan after WW II. He was honorably discharged in January of 1948. On July 2, 1950, Loren married Ardis Anderson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, rural Kloten, ND. They lived in Starkweather and Hunter, before moving to Galesburg in 1957, where he farmed and operated Halvorson Farm Supply until his retirement. His passion was growing edible beans and making improvements on bean cutters. He invented and sold the Big “H” Rod Weeder. He was also Water Commissioner for the city of Galesburg for 30 years. Loren enjoyed family times, farming and playing poker. He will be remembered for his quick wit, morning round table discussions and the endless supply of Oreos and coffee for visitors at the shop. Loren is survived by his wife of 59 years, son Rickie (Mary) of Galesburg, two daughters, Kaye (Danny) Matson of Hawley, MN and Jan Moen of Galesburg; nine grand children, Justin, Ashley and Jenna Halvorson; Judd and Alissa Matson; Andrea (Darby) Plath; Troy, Hannah and Maggie Moen; one step great-grandson, Braydin; one brother, Neil (Gail) Halvorson of Portland, ND; and two sisters, Kathryn Starr of Cando, ND and Jerlyn (Vernon) Wright of Mt. Vernon, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Duane and Norris, two sisters, Darlyne Ruud and Myrna Starr and son-in-law, Paul Moen. Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Friday, March 26, 2010 at Elm River Lutheran Church, Galesburg, ND. Visitation: 5-7 PM Thursday, March 25, 2010 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND, and one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Burial: Elm River Cemetery.
