Clara Rud, 94, Portland, ND, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Union Hospital, Mayville, ND. Clara Helene Leland was born February 11, 1912, in Steele County, rural Portland, the daughter of Herman A. and Oline Marie (Rise) Leland. She attended rural public school in Primrose Township, and graduated from Portland High School in 1931 where she enjoyed playing sports and was a guard on the basketball team. She attended Mayville State College where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught in rural Portland schools in Primrose and Enger Township from 1933 to 1939. Clara married Ted Rud in 1939 at Bang Lutheran Church, Portland, ND. Ted died in 1980. Clara was active in quilting projects for the Bang Church WELCA through March 2006. She served on several offices for WELCA and the Sons of Norway in Mayville. She was a volunteer at Union Hospital for 13 years and worked in Activities at Luther Memorial Home for several years. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends, taking walks, sewing, riding in her son’s airplane, traveling and especially dancing. She is survived by her daughter, Linda (David) Kringlie, Fargo, ND; son, Gilman Rud, Hollywood, MD; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Frances (Leland) Lee, Portland, ND; sister-in-law, Melinda (Berg) Leland; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Arthur and Einar Leland, one sister, Hennie (Leland) Hanson, and daughter-in-law Barbara (Carroll) Rud. FUNERAL SERVICE: Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Bang Lutheran Church, rural Portland, ND. VISITATION: Tuesday, July 25, 2006 from 5-6:30 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND, and one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. BURIAL: Bang Cemetery, rural Portland, ND.
