Luther J Dammen, 86, Mayville, ND, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Luther was born December 29, 1919, near Blanchard Township, ND. He graduated from Mayville High School, and continued on to Dakota Business College in Fargo, ND. He worked for Gamble Robinson in Bismarck when he was inducted into the service on April 21, 1942. He received his basic training at Camp Roberts, CA and Fort Knox, KY where he was assigned to the 5th Armored division. He was personnel and battalion sergeant major at different times and supervised the work of 30 men concerned with personnel and other records making up payrolls and correspondence. Campaigns he took part in were Normandy, North France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was awarded 5 battle stars, the good conduct medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater service medal. After 3 years and 6 months of service in the army, major sergeant Luther Dammen received his discharge. Luther returned to farming in Mayville and did crop spraying for Dornacker Seed Company. He married Inez Stavedahl in 1960 and worked for the US Post Office until his retirement in 1986. Luther was very good at bowling and golfing. He also loved to hunt and fish. Luther and Inez spent many winters in California and Mesa, Arizona. Luther enjoyed woodworking and would spend hours in his home shop making usable gifts and crafts for his family. He is survived by his wife, Inez, Mayville, ND; sister, Joyce Ellefson, CA; one niece; 2 nephews; one step grandson, Garth (Diane) Elken, and his mother Gerry Elken; three step great-grandchildren, all of Chandler, AZ; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepson Gilbert (Tup) Elken, and brother-in-law Art Ellefson. MEMORIAL SERVICE: Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 2:00 PM at Mayville Lutheran Church, Mayville, ND. VISITATION: One hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. BURIAL: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
