Hazel Marie Ann Larson Bakken Nyhus, 84, of Portland, ND, died peacefully with her daughter by her side, Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at the Union Hospital in Mayville, ND. Hazel was born May 31, 1925 in Blanchard, ND to Albert O. Larson (1882-1961) and Sarah C. Thompson Larson (1886-1959). She was baptized into the Christian faith at Norman Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Clifford, ND and was later confirmed at Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland. She attended school at Greenfield Township and in Portland, ND. Hazel was married to Arthur B. Bakken on December 4, 1957 in Crookston, MN. One daughter, JoAnn was born of this union. Arthur died May 8, 1967. She married Peder E. Nyhus on February 28, 1969. Peder died May 16, 1991. Hazel was a lifelong resident of Portland, ND. She was an active member of the V.F.W. Woman’s Auxiliary and Bruflat Lutheran Church. She cooked for several area restaurants and after retirement lovingly supported JoAnn in her family daycare business. She loved children, having a garden and many beautiful flowers; she enjoyed canning and watching her Chicago Cubs. She also had a natural gift for crocheting, knitting and sewing and was quick to offer her handiwork as gifts. She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Bakken Studlien of Portland; her brother, Allan D. Larson of Mesa, AZ and Crookston, MN; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, David McMullen. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Clarence, Thomas, Arthur, Chester, and Harland Larson; four sisters, Clara Mavis Larson, Adeline Schjeldahl, Joyce Balstad, Delores Ratiu; her husbands, Arthur and Peder; and son-in-law, Dennis Studlien. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, aunt, friend, and (adopted) grandmother to many. Visitation: 2 hours prior to the funeral service, at the church in Portland.
