Alpha R. Moe, 96, of Mayville, ND, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, where she had been a resident since February 2005. Alpha Evelyn Rockne was born on August 27, 1913 in Portland, ND, the first of five daughters of Albert and Emma (Smedsrud) Rockne. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a member of Mayville Lutheran Church. She graduated from Mayville High School in 1932. Alpha earned her Standard Degree at Mayville State Teacher’s College in 1934 and her Bachelor of Science in Education at Mayville State College in 1971. Alpha married Henry A. Moe on August 6, 1933 in Hillsboro, ND. During the years that Mr. Moe was a school superintendent, the family moved to many communities in rural Minnesota and North Dakota. In addition to raising a family of seven children, she taught school for nine years. After Mr. Moe retired in 1969, they lived on their farm near Mayville year round. Alpha was a past member of the Executive Board of the Mayville Senior Center, a representative on the Traill County Council Board, a member of the Sons of Norway, the North Dakota Pioneer Daughters, the Dorcas Circle of the Mayville Lutheran Church, the church quilting group and the M-300 Club at Mayville State University. In her leisure time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, baking and gardening. She had many huge flower and vegetable gardens at her home. Alpha is survived by one daughter, Evelyn (Richard Felton) Pederson of Grand Forks, ND; five sons, Eugene (Mary) of Nevis, MN, John (Mitchie) of Federal Way, WA, Herman (Doris) of Grand Forks, Charles (Shirley) of Vining, MN, and Thomas (Susan Johnson) of Mayville; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; son Richard; parents; and sisters, Orva Egge, Eleanor Knopf, Vivian Claughton, and Zona English. Memorials preferred to Mayville State University Moe Family Scholarship Fund, or the Mayville Lutheran Church Sunshine Circle. Funeral Service: 1:00 PM Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Mayville Lutheran Church, Mayville, ND. Visitation: 5-7 PM Friday, November 6, 2009 at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND, and one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Interment: Mayville City Cemetery
