Alice Higdem, 81, died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, where she had been a resident for nearly four years. Alice Jean Thuen was born on September 11, 1928 in Sharon, ND to Hans and Ella (Bjerke) Thuen. She attended rural schools, graduating from Portland High School in 1947, the first high school graduate in her family. She married Lawence Higdem on January 4, 1948, and they made their home in Portland. Alice was an excellent cook and was employed at the Portland Café at the age of 19, doing all of the baking for the restaurant. She loved children and baby-sitting at home. She was employed in the dietary department of Union Hospital in Mayville for many years before retiring in 1990. Alice was a member of Aurdal Lutheran Church and the Portland American Legion Auxiliary. Alice is survived by her daughters, Linda Godejohn of Williston, ND, and Diane (Truman) Ulland of Mayville; grandchildren, Jason (Heidi) Ulland, Lynn (Mark) Skelton, Laurie (Marshall) Wendell, Katie Godejohn, Keith Ulland, Cindy (Rick) Kraft, Steve (Renee) Ulland, Merle (Carolynn) Ulland; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Thuen of Portland; one sister-in-law, Gladys Thuen of Portland and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Lawrence in 1998; brothers, Selmer (Gladys) and Reuben (Loretta); sisters, Judy (Clarence) Strand, Henny (James) Strand, Margaret (Carl) Bauer; and son-in-law Robert Godejohn. Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland, ND. Visitation: 5-7 PM Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND, and one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Burial: Aurdal Cemetery, rural Portland, ND.
