Lloyd "Steve" Holt

September 4, 1951 — August 1, 2017

Lloyd Steven “Steve” Holt, 65, passed peacefully Tuesday, August 1, 2017 under the care of the Fargo VA Health Care Center with family by his side following a brief struggle with cancer. Steve was born at Mayville, ND on September 4, 1951 to Linden and Nettie (Braaten) Holt. He was raised on farms first in Lindaas Township, starting elementary school there, and then in Blanchard Township continuing elementary school and later graduating from Mayville High School. He attended Mayville State College for one year. Steve enlisted in the Army, serving actively in the North Dakota National Guard and Reserves for twenty-one years, retiring in 1990. He trained at Ft Leonard Wood MO as a heavy artillery gunner and was attached to Btry B-1 188th ADA in North Dakota. Over many recent years, he was also very active in the American Legion Post in Mayville having served as Commander, a source of pride for him. Military service and Veterans were very important to Steve. Though never having served there but of that era, he had a special place in his heart for the Viet Nam Veterans. He felt privileged to have worked with the North Dakota Chapter of the Viet Nam Veterans and counted among their ranks many close life-long friends. A special memory was the honor to attend their national convention in Washington D.C., march in the parade with local chapter members and visit the Viet Nam Memorial wall. Growing up on a farm served Steve well. He learned to love farm and field work and loved to talk farming, and to do field work when the opportunity and health allowed. Steve worked many years at Galesburg Elevator and at American Crystal Sugar in Hillsboro. He also worked at Mayville State University in the facilities service area. When his kidney disease no longer allowed full-time work, he was fortunate to enjoy spending summers at his camper on Crystal Lake. He made many dear friends among his neighbors at the campground. Steve loved to provide pontoon rides and fishing to family and friends. Steve is survived by his sister Sharyl (Bruce) Hanson, Mayville, and his brother Tim (Denise) Holt, Grand Forks; two nephews, three nieces, two great-nephews and three great-nieces; and many dear aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Doug Holt. His family extends heartfelt thanks to Fargo Sanford Dialysis, Grand Forks Aurora Dialysis, and the special Fargo VA Health Care System for the many years of compassionate and excellent care given to Lloyd “Steve” Holt.
