Sidney Ronald Heskin, 90 of Portland, ND died Monday September 14, 2009 at the North Dakota Veteran’s Home in Lisbon, ND. Sidney was born October 22, 1918 in Portland, North Dakota. He attended elementary and high school in Portland where he was active in Church music as a soloist and men’s’ quartet. In 1930 he entered the Traill County play day contest at Hillsboro as a vocal soloist earning a first rating. Adele P. Lein, vocal instructor at Mayville College invited him to sing before the assembly. He attended Mayville College and was drafted at that time for service in World War II for four years. Sidney was in the 4th Coast Artillery Band in Panama for two years. He spent two years in bands in the states; one of which was the Army War College Band, in Washington D.C. Sidney was a graduate of Mac Phial College in Minneapolis and taught music in various states. Sidney’s parents, Carl and Alpha Heskin, his brother-in-law Sig Olsen, a great-great-niece Megan McLain, and a great-nephew Cory Olsen preceded him in death. Survivors include his sister, Mavis Olsen, Yankton, SD, his niece, Sharon & Arlan Scharberg, Hayfield, MN, two nephews Stephen & Peggy Olsen, Fort Smith, AR, & Timothy & Bonnie Olsen, Argyle, TX, several nieces, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. In lieu of flowers, it was Sid’s wish donations be made to Anne Carlsen Center for Children, 301 – 7th Avenue N.W. Jamestown, ND 58401. Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Friday, September 18, 2009 at Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland, ND. Visitation: One hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Interment: Aurdal Lutheran Church Cemetery.
