Edith Junette Harstad was born September 24, 1922, on the rural Harstad farm in Mayville Township, to parents Ole K. and Helen (Akre) Harstad. She attended a one-room rural school through Grade 8 and graduated from Mayville High School with the class of 1940. Edith enrolled at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN. Music gave her joy and she taught elementary school music for 3 years in Grand Forks and in Hillsboro, ND. Edith took business courses at Mayville State Teacher's College, and she became the secretary for J. Evert Scholten in the Registrar's office of MSTC. Edith married Reuben Korsmo on June 14, 1951, in Mayville Lutheran Church. They lived on the Harstad farm and worked that land for 18 years. During this time, Edith assisted with many tax seasons in the Harvey Kaldor Law Office. Edith was active in Mayville Lutheran Church, by teaching Sunday School for 12 years, and as a member of her ladies' Circle. In 1970 Edith and Reuben purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Mayville, which they operated until 1984. Many of the following winters were spent traveling South, especially to Mesa, AZ. In July 2005 they moved to Sun Center South apartments in Mayville where they enjoyed socializing with the other residents. Edith passed away peacefully on January 30, 2017, in her home in Mayville, under Hospice care. Edith was preceded in death by her parents; Reuben, her husband of 57 years; brothers Julian ( Ardyce) Harstad, and Karsten (Ruth) Harstad; brother-in-law Philip (Borgie) Korsmo, and sisters-in-law Korinne (Korsmo) Smith and Florence Korsmo. Survivors include son Neil (Chris) Korsmo, of West Branch, Iowa; and daughter Jane (Bob) Winter, of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren Katrina Korsmo, Tim Winter, Craig (Steph) Winter; great-grandchildren Lennon and Cora Winter; her sister, Gudrun Harstad; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: Will be from 4–5 PM on Friday, February 3, 2017 with a 5 PM Public Prayer Service at the Luther Memorial Home Chapel in Mayville, ND and resumed one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND. Burial: Will be in the Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
