Samuel Oxton, 97, of Mayville, ND formerly of Finley, ND died Friday, July 1, 2016 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. Samuel Robert Oxton was born November 25, 1918 to Samuel and Jennie (Windness) Oxton in Finley, ND. He graduated from Finley High School. Sam entered the US Army and served during World War II in the South Pacific for two years as a Staff Sergeant in the Signal Core and was honorably discharged in 1945. On July 2, 1954, Sam married Jean Horner Burner. They made their home in Finley where they raised their daughter, Dawn. The couple spent many summers on Twin Lake, MN and winters in Mesa, AZ. They moved to Mayville in 2006, after living 88 years in the home he was born in. Sam and Jean owned and operated a trailer park that served the community for 50 years. Sam was also a rural mail carrier for 30 years, retiring in 1984. Sam was a member of the United Methodist Church in Finley, where he served many years on the church board as Chairman, taught Sunday school and worked with the youth groups. He was also a member of the Rural Carriers Association, American Legion and is the Past Master of the Mayflower Masonic Lodge. He was active with the Finley Park Board, Finley Cemetery Board, former President of PTA and served as the Past Master of the Sgt. Compass Club in Val Vista Village in Mesa, AZ Sam enjoyed many hobbies, like wood carving, gardening, traveling and fishing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He always had time to play or help with his grandsons; they loved fishing, golfing or playing games together. He shared in their lives and careers and took great pride and interest in them. He is survived by his daughter: Dawn (Alan) Senger of Linton, ND; grandson: Samuel Robert (Angela) and great grandsons: Braden and Kyler Senger all of Mina, SD; and several nieces and nephews. Sam is preceded in death by his wife: Jean on October 12, 2015; his parents; 3 brothers; a sister; stepson: Roger Burner and a grandson: Jay Charles Senger. Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Funeral Service: 1:00 PM Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville, ND. Military Honors: Finley American Legion & North Dakota Military Funeral Honors. Burial: Will take place in the Finley Cemetery, Finley, ND.
