Gladys Marie Schreiner, 83, of Mayville, ND died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Union Hospital in Mayville, surrounded by her loving family, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Gladys was born January 25, 1926, the daughter of John and Rena (Staveteig) Tannahill, in rural Thompson, ND. She attended Allendale grade school #60 through 8th grade, and graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks, ND in 1943. Gladys worked at Woolworths Office and later at Murphy Finance Office as a secretary, in Grand Forks. On June 19, 1945 Gladys married Raymond Schreiner at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Thompson. They lived in rural Mayville where they farmed. In September 1980 they moved to Mayville. Ray died April 19, 2006. Gladys became a resident of the Luther Memorial Home in January 2007. Gladys was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Mayville, where she was active in the Ladies Guild, serving in all offices. She was very proud of her work with the Foster Grandparents program at Mayville State University from 1998-2005 and enjoyed watching the children as they grew. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, Artex painting of dishtowels and tablecloths, and loved to crochet afgans. She loved traveling to Arizona during the winter for 12 years with Ray, along with their many fishing trips together at Lake of the Woods. She is survived by 6 children, Sharon (Robert) Bjerke, Clifford, ND, Marie Thykeson, Lewiston, ID, Tim Schreiner, Hillsboro, ND, Beverly (James) Brust, Laramie, WY, Jan (Tom) Oelrich, West Fargo, ND, and Andrew, (Vicki) Schreiner, Mayville, ND; 16 grandchildren, Michael Bjerke, Angela (Chad) Lindstrom, Brian (Erin) Bjerke, Todd Thykeson, Tammy Green, Tonya (Daniel) Pruneda, James Schreiner, Joseph Schreiner, Joseph Brust, Tina (fiancee Johnathan) Brust, Jonathan Brust, Barry (Wendy) Oelrich, Tami (William) Rygg, Justin (Kara) Schreiner, Allison Schreiner, and Brandon Schreiner; 22 great-grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Dee) Tannahill, Kerrville, TX; and one sister-in-law, Ann Tannahill of Orange, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray, her parents, 4 sisters, Jean Busch, Edith Lerfald, Virginia Smith, and June Hjarte, 1 brother, Jim Tannahill and son-in-law Lowell Thykeson. FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:00 AM Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Mayville, ND. VISITATION: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 from 5-7PM with a prayer service at 7PM, at Luther Memorial Home Chapel and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
