S. Lee Vinje, 65, of Portland, ND, died Saturday, February 21, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND. Lee was born in Mayville on December 27, 1943, the son of Hagbert and Eldrid (Amundson) Vinje. He grew up near Finley, ND, and graduated from Finley High School. Lee attended NDSU and graduated from UND Law School in 1968. On June 5, 1966, he married Sheryl Qualey at Sheyenne Valley Lutheran Church, near Finley. After there marriage, Lee entered the US Army and was stationed in Fort Bliss TX. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and the couple returned to Mayville. Lee started practicing law with Harvey Kaldor and most recently with the Ohnstad Twichell Law Firm in Mayville. Lee was a member of the Mayville Lutheran Church. He served as the Portland City Attorney for 30 years, was on the Union Hospital Board for 9 years and was on the First and Farmers Bank Board for many years. Lee was active in the Goose River Lodge #19, Shriners and numerous civic organizations. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and especially his grandchildren. Lee was known for his wit, kindness and warm personality. He is survived by his wife, Sheryl of Portland; one daughter, Sara (Chris) Triggs of Moorhead, MN; one son, Eric (Christine) Vinje of Glyndon, MN; five grandchildren, Caden, Carson and Taliah Triggs, Mikenzie and Parker Vinje; one sister, Ona (Darryl) Bures of Flasher, ND; one brother, Mark Vinje of Valley City, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and two grandchildren, Hope and Gabriel Triggs. Memorials preferred to the charity of donors choice. Visitation: Monday, February, 23 from 5:30-7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM, at Baker Funeral Home in Mayville, and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
