Ruth A. Kvernen, 89, of Portland, ND, died on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND. Ruth was born January 18, 1926 at the home of her parents, John and Anne Kringlen of Hatton, Ruth was one of 11 brothers and sisters. Family was always very important to her. Ruth attended Larimore High School for two years, graduating from Hatton High School. After high school, she very much enjoyed her office nursing work for Dr. Lafleur in Mayville. She married Raymond Odell Kvernen, October 1947. With unshakeable Christian faith, Ruth worked hard as Mom, farmer’s wife, 4-H leader, cook at MPCG High School and Portland Café. Ruth was committed to teaching Sunday School, Bible Studies and church activities. She competed on bowling and horseshoe leagues. She loved to visit, sew, watch birds, play cards, and share baked donuts, buns and Norwegian Christmas goodies. Her many interests and sharp wit, punctuated with endless idioms, kept her very active until October 2012 when strokes required the gracious care of the Mayville Luther Memorial Home staff. Ruth is preceded in death by husband, Ray; grandsons, Jonathan Hans Kvernen and Christopher John Kvernen. Ruth is survived by her four children: Bev (Harold) Nelson of Breckenridge, MN, Don (Rosella) of Rochester MN, Luther (Jan) of Grand Forks, ND and Lois (Gene) Sipprell of Eden Prairie, MN; 8 grandchildren: Michelle (Darren) Kallod of West Fargo, ND, Sheree’ (Tim) Steier of Maple Grove, MN, Joshua (Elisabeth) Kvernen of Washington, D.C., Matthew (Laura) Kvernen of East Asia, Andy (Kristi) Kvernen of West Fargo, ND, Krisanne (Paul) Emch of Indonesia, Michael Sipprell and Daniel Sipprell of Eden Prairie, MN; 21 great grandchildren; brother: Robert (Delores) Kringlen of Grand Forks, ND; brother-in-law: Irving Eng of Hankinson, ND; sisters-in-law: Avis Karlstad and Rose Kvernen of Mayville, ND; granddaughter-in-law: Svea (Steve) Merry of Rochester, MN; and numerous loved and loving nieces and nephews. Visitation: Will be 4- 6 PM with a 6 PM Public Prayer Service on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND. Burial: Will be at the Perry Cemetery, rural Portland, ND.
