Dennis Kost, 79, of Portland, ND passed away peacefully on September 4, 2015. Dennis Ray Kost was born March 8, 1936 in Martin, ND to Emanuel and Tillie Kost and graduated from high school there in 1953. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Minot State University in 1957, his Master’s degree from NDSU in 1962 and his Doctorate in Education from UND in 1969. Dennis married Carol Berger on December 21, 1958 in Fort Ransom, ND. They lived in Fargo, Minneapolis, Mayville, Grand Forks and eventually settled in Portland in 1969. Dennis had a passion for education. His career in education included two years at West Fargo High School, one year at University High School in Minneapolis and 37 years in the Education Department at Mayville State College. He served for several years as the Chairman of the Education Department and ultimately retired in 1997 with Professor Emeritus distinction. Another passion that Dennis had was farming. In 1975, he purchased a plot of land for a hobby farm and embarked on a second career that lasted nearly 40 years; first growing small produce and eventually building a greenhouse to produce hydroponic tomatoes and flowers. He is survived by his wife, Carol, of 56 years; four sons Scott (Karen) Casselton, Kent (Shelly) Meggen, Switzerland, Tim (Staci) Lakeville, MN, and Chad (Stephanie), Fargo; 14 grandchildren Sarah (Kaleif), Bethany (Spencer), Laura, Jenna, Gabriel, Ryan, Leonardo, Alexa, Mitchell, Jacob, Abbey, Luke, McKinley, Cameron; and six great-grandchildren, Ella, Sadie, Reese, Betsy, June, and Robert; one brother, Jack, and one sister, Marceda. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale, LeJune, Wayne, Mylo; and sister, Eunice. Memorials can be made in honor of Dennis to Mayville Lutheran Church or Roger Maris Cancer Center. Visitation: Will be 5- 7 PM on Monday, September 7, 2015 with a 7 PM Public Prayer Service at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND. Burial: Will be at the Mayville Cemetery in Mayville, ND.
