Joyce Elaine Ulland, 76, of Mayville, ND died July 10, 2015 at Sun Center in Mayville, ND. Joyce Elaine Boedeker was born Sept. 19, 1938 to Otto and Manda (Nelson) Boedeker in Lowden, Iowa. She attended grade school in Braham, MN and graduated Mayville High School in 1956. In 1957 she obtained a three-year rural certificate from MSU. She taught grades 1-8 in Mayville #3 from 1957-1959. She married Paul Ulland in 1958. They had four children: Kelly, Ray, Laurie, and Sharon. She returned to MSU at age 30 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She taught for the Mayville, May-Port, MayPort CG school districts from 1971-1994. She was instrumental in establishing a K-6 Title 1 Reading Program which she taught for 23 years. She received her master’s degree in Education Administration from UND in 1992. She had the privilege of being elementary principal at Peter Boe Elementary and Clifford-Galesburg Elementary from 1994-2000 and retired in May of 2000. She served on various school committees. Joyce was a member of Mayville Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at MLC and Gran. She served on the Church Council and various committees. She was a member of Mayville Women’s Club and held a variety of positions. She taught one session of summer school at MSU. Joyce worked at Stende’s Red Owl, May-Port Aviation, Paula’s, Mayville Golf Club, and Corner Café. Joyce enjoyed working for the sake of the job at hand. She enjoyed family, friends, reading, proof reading, writing poetry, crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, weather-especially fall and the first snowfall, bird watching, and her cat Raggs. She is survived by her children: Kelly Ann Harrison (David) of Mayville; Ray Scott of Minot, Laurie Lee Perlmutter (Terry Eidenschink) of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Sharon Marie Peterson (Cal) of Mayville; grandchildren: Joe Steinbach, Nicole Sickler (Jason) and Matt Steinbach; Josh Ulland (Brandie), Tanisha Perlmutter, Ezra Eidenschink; Amanda McGrath (Jonny); Derek Peterson (Jeni), Ryan Peterson (Ashley) and Josh Peterson (Ashley); great-grandchildren: Cailee, Nora, and Cutler Peterson, Keagan and Westin Peterson, Camden McGrath; Tommy, Shay, Henry, and Aubry Ulland, Adam and Justin Palmquist; and two sisters: Veda Krigbaum (Bob) of Mayville and Gail Filipi of Mayville, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joyce was preceded in death by Paul Ulland, her parents, two infant sisters Blanche and Naomi, and her brother Allan. She donated her body to UND’s Medical School so she could continue teaching even after her death. Visitation: Will be 5 – 7 PM with a 7 PM Public Prayer Service on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial Service: 10:00 AM Friday, July 17, 2015 at Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND.
