James B. Miller, 85, of Mayville, ND died on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND. Jim, known as JB to his many friends, was born in New Leipzig, ND on December 4, 1929 to Susan and Joseph Miller. Jim graduated from St. James Academy in Grand Forks, ND. He later enlisted in the US Navy serving aboard the USS Daly during the Korean War. Jim was proud of his service in the Navy and often told stories of his travel around the world. Some of his best friends and times were with his “Navy buddies” over the years. Jim and Marilyn (Iverson) were married August 13, 1956 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Grand Fork, ND. Marilyn passed away in 1981. Jim’s occupation was a butcher at a family-owned grocery business, Miller’s Super Fair in Grand Forks before starting a grocery store of his own in Jamestown, ND in 1968. He later moved the store down the street to the former Tempo space and opened a True Value hardware store. His son, Jeff, entered into the grocery business asking his dad to lead the meat department for Millers Fresh Foods. Jim grew the meat department into a successful business. In his retirement, Jim continued to work, driving the store van making deliveries between two of Jeff’s eight stores. His dog, Billie would accompany him in the passenger seat on his travels between the stores. Jim was very outgoing, a great story teller with a witty sense of humor and would easily strike up a conversations with strangers. He had an interest in history and politics and his faith in God and his family were the important parts of his life. Jim faced many challenges, but his faith kept him going strong. Jim’s life mattered and made an imprint on many people’s lives. He will be greatly missed. Jim is survived by his daughters: Mary Jo (Neil) Swanson, Julie (Bob) Miller-Erler; son: Jeff (Lori Morkve) Miller; brother: Frank (Phyllis) Miller; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife: Marilyn; his daughter: Amy; three sisters; three brothers; and his parents. Memorials can be made to Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Mayville ND. Visitation: Will be 5 – 7 PM with a 6:30 PM Public Prayer Service on Friday, July 3, 2015 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, in Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the service. Funeral Service: 10:00 AM Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Mayville, ND.
