Alf Haugen

Alf Haugen, 92, of Mayville, ND, died Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. He was born on May 23, 1916, in Portland, ND, the son of Peter and Marie (Berg) Haugen. He attended rural school at Viking 10. He worked mainly on Martin Amb’s farm until he started framing with his brother Oliver in 1939 On December 23, 1943, Alf married Helen Frosaker in Fort Morgan, Colorado. In 1951, he and Helen moved into Mayville. He and Oliver built an alfalfa dehydrating plant in 1950, the Haugen Feed Company in 1966, and POMA Industries in 1974. He retired from farming in 1978, but continued to help on the farm until he was in his mid 80’s, and still drove out to the farm four or five days a week during the summer to check how everything was going. Alf was active in the Aurdal Lutheran Church, held different positions on the Board of the Portland Elevator and was on the Board at the Luther Memorial Home. Alf enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cards with friends. After he retired, he started to can pickles and did some baking. His specialty was strul. Alf is survived by his wife, Helen of Mayville; one son Jay Haugen of Portland; one daughter, Linda Basol of Mayville; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Palmer Haugen of Mayville. He was preceded by one son, Gene Haugen; one daughter, Janis Kaufman; one granddaughter, Shelby Haugen; one brother, Oliver Haugen and three sisters, Elvina Haagenson, Mildred Finstad and Juneth Nelson. Visitation: Will be from 5 – 7 pm with a 6:30 pm public prayer service on Wednesday at the Baker Funeral Home and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Service: 11 am on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church of Portland, ND Burial: Aurdal Cemetery of Portland
