Surrounded by the love of her family, friends, and community, Bonnie Nelson, 79, of Portland, ND, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at Union Hospital in Mayville. Bonnie was born November 22, 1929 in Mayville, ND to Arthur and Emma (Haugen) Chilsted. She attended school in California, as well as Hatton, graduating as a Mayville Lion in 1947. In 1948, she married Duane Nelson, raising their four children on the family farm. She served the community by working many years at Luther Memorial Home and Union Hospital. A member of Perry Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School and was part of the Ladies Aid throughout her life. Bonnie enjoyed bowling, bingo, and having fun with her Red Hat friends. She is survived by her husband, Duane, four children and their families; Doug, of Westminster, CA, Julie (Mark) Basol of North Ferrisburgh, VT, James (Rhonda) and Daniel (LaDonna), of Portland, ND; three grandchildren, Craig Nelson Basol, Beau Nelson, and Kendall Nelson. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Gilbert and Art. The family would like to thank the myriad of doctors and nurses that have been with Bonnie, especially over the past two weeks. Memorials preferred to the Union Hospital Foundation or the Perry Lutheran Church. Visitation: Tuesday, Dec. 9, 5:00-7:00pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm at Baker Funeral Home in Mayville, and one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Funeral Service: Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at 10:30am at Perry Lutheran Church, rural Portland. Burial: Perry Lutheran Church Cemetery: following the service.
