Theodore Maynard Strand, 87, of Portland, ND, died on Monday, September 22, 2014 under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley at the Sanford Hospital in Mayville, ND surrounded by his family. Maynard was born June 8, 1927 to Theodore and Clara (Bothum) Strand on the family centennial farm west of Portland where he lived his entire life. He attended and graduated from Portland High School in 1945. He married Edith Karlstad on March 14, 1948. Maynard served on the Portland Credit Union Board, Viking Township Board, and on Golden Lake Association. Maynard was instrumental in the Cross Project at Aurdal Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed, and was a lifelong member. Maynard enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid fisherman and a Vikings and Twins fan. He was very proud of his family farm and enjoyed yard work and gardening. Maynard was a farmer but also worked at American Crystal Sugar for a number of years. Survivors include his wife: Edith of 66 years; five sons: Merle (Gail) of Portland, ND, Wayne (Georgia) of Minot, ND, Tim (Sue) of Mayville, ND, Terry (Mary Ellen) Steele, ND, and Kevin (Lisa) of Thompson, ND; 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Maynard is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Clarence, Orville, Ernest and James; three sisters: Agnes, Gladys and Mavis. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Sanford Home Health, or Aurdal Lutheran Church. Visitation: Will be 5 – 7 PM with a 7:00 PM Public Prayer Service on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Monday, September 29, 2014 at the Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland, ND. Burial: Will be at the Aurdal Cemetery, Portland, ND.
