Alida J. Skatberg, 100, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Portland, ND, died Sunday, July 27, 2014 at ManorCare in Fargo. Alida Justine Skatberg was born January 31, 1914 in Cottonwood, MN, the seventh child of Tennes Kristian Skatberg and Marie Justine (Stangeland) Skatberg who immigrated from Sola, Norway in 1901. She was baptized at St. Lucas Church in Cottonwood, MN. In 1915, at the age of 1 year, her family moved to High Landing, MN, (near Thief River Falls) to farm, raise cattle and milk cows. Alida and her sister Mabel raised their "champion pigs" on that farm. She attended school in High Landing through the 8th grade and was confirmed at High Landing Lutheran Church. In 1929 a farm was purchased in Portland, North Dakota and the family moved there in early 1930. Alida worked on the farm taking care of the household and often drove grain trucks in the field. She and her family were long time members of the Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland, where Alida was active in the Ladies Aid. The family farm in Portland was sold in 1979, and she and Mabel purchased a home in Mayville, ND. In September, 1990, Alida and Mabel made a trip to Sola and Stavanger, Norway, to visit their family; the trip was a highlight in Alidas' life. She lived in Mayville until 1994, when she moved to an apartment in Fargo for a year and then purchased a home in the fall of 1995. She moved to ManorCare in the spring of 2009. Alida is preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Clara and Mabel; brothers: Toralf, Trygve, Marvin “Stanley” and Elmer. Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Mayville, ND. Burial: Will be at the Bruflat Cemetery in Portland, ND.
