Avis Luella Aasen

Avis Aasen, 90, of Mayville, died Sunday, August 17, 2008, at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley surrounded by her family. Avis Luella (Amundson) Aasen was born on March 2, 1918 in Hatton, ND the daughter of Helge and Regina (Stevning) Amundson. She grew up in Hatton where she was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church. Avis was united in marriage to Carl Lester Aasen on September 17, 1936. They made their home in the Clifford/Blanchard area farming for several years. They moved into Mayville-Portland where they owned and managed the Gambles store until they went into partnership with the Aasen brothers at the Mayville Elevator. Avis and Carl wintered in Mesa, AZ for many years, enjoying their many friends and the sunny weather. They also spent many summers with family and friends at their cabin on Lake Melissa near Detroit Lakes, MN. Avis was an active member of the First American Lutheran Church women’s guild throughout her adult life. She volunteered many years at Luther Memorial Home providing hair care to the residents there. Avis enjoyed crocheting blankets and quilting, bowling, reading, baking, gardening and hummingbirds. She shared her love of making lefse and flatbread each year with her grandchildren and great grandchildren during the holidays. Her love of family stood above all else. Her children were her life and her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandson brought much joy to her. Avis is survived by her children: son - C. Wayne (Karolyn) Aasen, Wahpeton, ND; daughters - Janice (Jerry) Carr, Mayville, ND; Barbara Brend, Fargo, ND; Mary (George) Pettit, Coal Valley, IL; her sister: Beverly Basol, Cooperstown, ND; her grandchildren: Keith (Barb) Aasen, Bismarck, ND; Angela Aasen, Cummings, ND; Todd Aasen, Hillsboro, ND; Daniel (Amy) Aasen, Fargo, ND; Carla (David) Moeller, Mayville, ND; Lori (Mark) Dickson, Galesburg, ND; Michael (Jennifer) Carr, Mayville, ND; Shannon (Tammy) Brend, Fargo, ND; Darian (Jody) Brend, Apple Valley, MN; Mary Beth Miller, Fargo, ND; Chad (Dixie) Aune, Beaufort, SC; Jeremy Aune, Milan, IL; Shea (Jeff ) Trask, Moline, IL; Gabe (Liz) Pettit, Moline, IL; 24 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Carl L. Aasen; her parents Regina and Helge Amundson, stepfather Marius Olson; brothers and sisters Alf Amundson, Gerhard Amundson, Ethel Pederson, Hildred Wisdahl, Kenneth Amundson, and Norman Amundson; grandson Jeffrey Wayne Aasen and great granddaughter Emma Hope Brend. Funeral: 2:00 PM, Friday, August 22, 2008, at First American Lutheran Church, Mayville, ND. Visitation: Thursday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
