Alwood Lowell Brend, age 81 of Portland ND, passed away on Friday August 9, 2013, at home from natural causes. Alwood was born May 30, 1932, to Alf and Lavina (Haagenson) Brend at home, in Primrose Township, Portland ND. He was baptized and confirmed at Perry Lutheran Church, rural Portland and remained a life-long member there. He attended Primrose Country School and Portland High School. Alwood married Gloria Moen on December 9, 1956. They raised their family on the home farm, where Alwood farmed, raised livestock, mainly sheep, as well as for working for Rent or Buy, American Crystal Sugar, Portland Bean Plant, and Benson Quinn. In 1983 they moved into Mayville and in 1992 into Portland, where he resided until his death. In his later years he was a car dealer, where you could still find him at the car auction every Thursday in West Fargo. He loved collecting hats, baseball cards and antique tractors. He was a faithful lottery player~ never really hitting the “jackpot” until now. Alwood’s pride and joy were his children and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by Gloria, and their children, Gary (Andrea) Portland ND, Sharee, Highlands Ranch, CO, Mark, Portland ND, Dawn (Parnell) Amb, Portland, ND and Anita (Rodney) Olson, Halstad MN. Nine grandchildren, Brock & Bradley Brend, Cody & Kyle (Missy) Amb & Brittany, Blake & Ryan Olson, Nicole (Justin) Bachmeier, and Melissa (Brent) Johnson. Seven great grandchildren, Jack Brend, Jaden, Brooke, Danica & Zander Bachmeier, Shelby & Riley Johnson and his sister, Darlene Hanson, Mayville. He is preceded in death by his son Jeffrey in 1987, his parents, his brother-in-law John Hanson and his foster sister Virginia Egge. Visitation: 5-7 PM on Monday, August 12, 2013 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Baker Funeral Home Chapel and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
