Carl “Orville” Skar, 95, of Mayville ND, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. Orville was born May 13, 1918 to Selmer and Carrie (Tungland) Skar at Pleasant Lake, ND. He attended school in Knox, ND and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the US Army in 1941 as WWII was beginning to unfold. He was transferred to the 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion which was among the first to arrive on the African continent. He served in Tunisia, Naples, Rome, Rhineland and Central Europe before being honorably discharged in 1945. On October 24, 1947 he married Arlene Stoe of Penn, ND. Orville worked in the grain business for Grain Terminal Association, as a plant manager, in many different communities including Larimore, Williston, Binford, Great Falls, MT and Mayville. He was a member of Mayville Lutheran Church, VFW and American Legion. Orville is survived by his wife of 66 years, Arlene of Mayville; brother Millard (JoAnn) of Kenmare, ND; brother-in-law, David Baarstd of Nevada; sister-in-law, Donna Skar of Kenmare; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Leslie, Obert, Clifford, Marvin, Milton, and Maynard Skar.
