Ronald Grinde, 76, Mayville, North Dakota, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Ronald James Grinde was born April 28, 1931, in Portland, North Dakota the son of Benjamin and Ida (Hendrickson) Grinde. He attended Roseville #1 School and graduated in 1949 from Portland High School. He loved sports and was proud to play basketball and football as a Portland Pirate. After high school he began farming with his father and took over the family farm in 1953. He enjoyed working with his cattle and tending to his crops for 52 years, before retiring and moving to Mayville in 2002. Ron married Elenore Hagen in Portland on June 19, 1951. Together they had five children. Ron enjoyed working with youth. He was a 4-H leader for 30 years and an instructor for North Dakota Hunter Education for 25 years. He also served as a West Traill Soil Conservation Supervisor and was an active member of many boards including the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and the Portland Credit Union. He was a charter board member of the Valley Farmers Bean Cooperative in Portland. Ron was active in both Trinity Lutheran and Bruflat Lutheran Churches where he also held several board positions. An avid outdoorsman, his favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Elenore; son Ken (Denise) Grinde, Portland; daughters Marjorie (Steve) Fugleberg, Mayville, Renae (Loren) Basol, Portland, Gayle (Rod) Jackson, Phoenix, AZ, and Denise (Shannon) Bergstrom, Portland; grandchildren Ross and Megan Fugleberg; Benjamin and Jerod Basol; Nicholas, Liza and Maxi Adams; Justin, Troy, Miranda and Katelin Grinde; and Ellie and Ethan Bergstrom; sisters Lois (Maurice) Ellingson, Elaine (Orien) Klath; and sisters-in-law Gloria Grinde, Verna (Lester) Helmeke, Inez (Wayne) Knain, and Marilyn Linnell and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Lyle and Wayne. Service: Monday, March 24, 2008 at 10:30 AM at Bruflat Lutheran Church, Portland, ND. Visitation: Sunday, March 23, 2008 from 4-6 PM with a prayer service at 5:30 PM at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial: Trinity Cemetery, rural Portland, ND.
