Marlene Carol Olson, 76 of Portland, ND died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at her home in Portland under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Marlene was the 7th child born to Otto and Edna (Opperud) Johnson at Ambrose, ND on December 6, 1936. She was baptized at Troy Lutheran Church in Divide County and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby, ND. She attended Lexington school at rural Crosby and high school in Crosby. She married Norman H. Olson of Bottineau, ND on June 27, 1953 at Bottineau. They lived in Rolette, ND before moving to Fargo, ND where her husband attended Barber School, and she worked at the Fargo Café. They moved to Hoople, ND in 1955. Marlene worked at the Hoople Hartz Store for 12 years until attending Bills Hairstyling College in Grand Forks, ND. She worked at Jolene’s Beauty Shop in Cavalier, ND before opening her own beauty shop in Hoople in 1975 where she worked until 1998. Norman passed away in 1998 and Marlene moved to Mayville, ND to be near family. She worked at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville from 1998 to 2012. Marlene enjoyed quilting, crocheting and spending time with family. She is survived by 2 daughters, Pamela (Lowell) Carlson of Portland, ND and Debbie (Gary) Bitz of Jamestown, ND; 4 grandchildren, Allison (Aaron) Rondestvedt, Kara (Tollef) Ringdahl, Nathan (Andrea) Bitz and Jason Bitz; 6 great-grandchildren, Alexis Klabo, Jaden Klabo, Trygve Ringdahl, Jessalyn Rondestvedt, Payton Rondestvedt, Madison Mandan and one more expected in March; brothers, Lloyd (Bonnie) Johnson, Raymond (Virginia) Johnson, Otto (Jan) Johnson, all of Prior Lake, MN, Lester (Leila) Johnson of Bottineau, ND; 3 sisters-in-law, Kerin (Bill) Bymark, Avis Johnson and Nancy Johnson all of Prior Lake; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; brothers, Arvid, Lavurne, Clayton and Donald; sisters, Donna Larson and Lavonne Carlson; and brother-in-law Bennie Carlson. Visitation: 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
