Thomas "Bumper" Brustad

Thomas “Bumper” Brustad, 60, of Hillsboro, ND died Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Thomas Lee Brustad was born on August 14, 1951 in Mayville, ND the son of Ruben L. and Marvel E. (Brooks) Brustad. Tom was baptized and confirmed at First American Lutheran Church in Mayville. He graduated from Mayville High School and then enlisted with the US Navy. Tom served four years and was stationed on the carrier USS Saratoga. After he was Honorably Discharged, he returned to the Hillsboro area and worked at American Crystal Sugar for over 36 years. Tom retired in 2011 as a Drier Foreman for health reasons. After being diagnosed with cancer, he did everything that was asked of him in hopes of having more time. The Lord took him home after an eight week hospital stay. Tom was a member Lifetime Member of the VFW and formerly the MP 191 National Guard Unit in Mayville. In his early years he enjoyed bowling and golfing and in the later years, fishing, casino visits and socializing with friends and co-workers. The family would like to give their “special thanks” to Diane Dahle and friends who helped him so much and also the staff at Sanford Hospital for the excellent care provided to Tom. He is preceded in death by his dad: Ruben. Tom is survived by his mother: Marvel Brustad of Portland, ND; brother: David (Nancy) Brustad of Devils Lake, ND; two nieces: Krista and Jessica Brustad and numerous cousins. Visitation: Will be on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 from 5 ~ 7 PM at the Baker Funeral Home and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Mayville Lutheran Church in Mayville, ND. Burial: Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
