Carl Peter Finstrom, 84, of Portland, ND passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 13, 2011, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Carl was born May 5, 1927 to Henning and Anna (Hanson) Finstrom at Buxton, ND. The family lived in Simcoe, ND briefly but returned to Buxton where Carl went to school in Wold Township. He was baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Buxton and he attended high school in St. Hilaire, MN. On December 21, 1952 he married Ruth Lindberg at Sebeka, MN. They lived on the family farm where they raised their seven children. Recently they lived several years in Portland, ND. Carl had a lifelong love of horses and passed that on to his family. He went to Tucson, AZ many times to drive a team of horses in the annual non-motorized rodeo parade. He was an avid John Wayne fan and collected items and videos. He was a charter member of the North Dakota Pottery Collectors Society and collected Rosemead Pottery. Carl and Ruth spent 25 winters in El Paso, TX. For many years they were vendors at flea markets in ND and north western MN where he sold hundreds of paperback books and mostly liked Louis L’Amour. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with neighbors and friends. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Buxton. Carl is survived by his wife, Ruth of Portland; daughters, Annette Hauser of Cummings, ND, Rebecca Lusk of El Paso, TX, and Janice Schulz of Hillsboro, ND; sons, Daniel (Teresa) of Buxton, Mark of Chaparral, NM, James of Las Cruces, NM and Joel of Cummings; brother, Henry Finstrom of Mayville, ND; grandchildren, Aaron, Harley, Kyle, Rae Ann, Amanda, Katelyn, Jennifer and Krystal; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gunvor Ellingrud and Selma Larson; brother, Lenning Aubol; nephew, Lonnie Aubol and three brothers-in-law. Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Buxton, ND. Visitation: 5-7 PM Wednesday, November 16, 2011 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, ND and will resume one hour prior to the funeral service, at the church. Burial: North Prairie Cemetery, rural Buxton, ND.
