Else Anna Peik, 94, of Mayville, ND, died Sunday, August 28, 2011 under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville. She was born May 5, 1917 in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Alfred and Marie (Haslau) Meyer. Else was the youngest of three daughters. Her sisters were Herta and Hilda. Else attended school from age 6 to 14 and then went to work in a department store, where she was in training for two years before she was allowed to serve a customer. Else’s mother died in 1935 and her father died in 1948. Else met Murl on a blind date on June 10, 1947, when he was in the US Army stationed in Germany. He couldn’t speak a word of German; she couldn’t speak a word of English. They were married on January 17, 1953 in Berlin, Germany. While Murl was in the service, they lived in Fort Riley, Kansas, Baltimore, MD and then three years in Iran. They then moved back to Fort Riley until his retirement in 1961. Their only child, Virginia Marie, was born in 1954. After Murl’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Keansburg, NJ and in 1980 moved to Mayville, ND. Murl died on February 26, 2000. Else entered the Luther Memorial Home in February of 2011 and has resided there since. She is preceded in death by her husband Murl; two sisters, Herta Hunger and Hilda Kosan. Else is survived by a daughter, Ginny (Lee) Fish of Barnesville, MN; two granddaughters, Annamarie (Jason) Francis and Kimberlin Fish; five great grandchildren, Charisma, Skylor, Jaeden, Talen and Dominic; one sister-in-law, Dolly (Brad) Lantz and many nieces and nephews. Visitation: Will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the chapel. Funeral Service: 1:00 PM Friday, September 2, 2011 at Luther Memorial Home Chapel, Mayville, ND. Interment: Mayville City Cemetery, Mayville, ND.
